Wanshou Garden of Jingzhou sits atop Guanyin Rock outcrop on the Jingjiang Levee. Named for its Southern Song-era riverside bluff and the Ming-dynasty Wanshou Pagoda, it is a celebrated riverside retreat that frames sweeping Yangtze views, weaving together a millennium of river-defense history and the timeless elegance of Ming dynasty pagoda architecture. Hundreds of years of river winds have blown through this land, etching the soft riverside memories of generations of Jingzhou residents deep into its grounds. Guanyin Rock, known officially as *"the First Rock on the Yangtze River"*, has guarded this most treacherous reach of the Jingjiang channel since the Southern Song Dynasty. The garden’s namesake Wanshou Pagoda was first built during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. After more than 400 years of unceasing river current erosion and gradual levee raising, 7.5 meters of its seven-story structure now sits buried below the levee surface, making it the one-of-a-kind "underground wonder pagoda" unique to this stretch of the Yangtze. The 87 white marble Buddha figures carved into its exterior walls still stand quiet, watching the tides rise and fall season after season. Recording these moments of river ripples and pagoda shadows is a quiet gift: it leaves a soft, lingering taste of Jingjiang riverside peace for anyone who carries nostalgia for old times, and preserves this garden’s present-day form for future generations. The upturned eaves of Wanshou Pagoda catch the drifting cloud reflections on the river, as serene as they were hundreds of years ago. As long as the tides still lap against this rock outcrop, every trace of bygone years will always find a quiet resting place here.
