Welcome to 12.5 – Unit I.2: Practical Implementation of Strings in Python.
In this video, we learn how to work with Strings in Python through simple explanations and practical examples. The session focuses on how to create strings, access individual characters, use indexing and slicing, and perform important string operations.
This video is useful for B.Pharm students, Pharmaceutical Sciences students, Python beginners, and anyone learning the fundamentals of Python programming.
Topics Covered
✅ What is a String in Python?
✅ How to Create a String
✅ Single and Double Quotes
✅ Accessing Characters in a String
✅ Positive Indexing

✅ Membership Operations
✅ Finding String Length
✅ Common String Operations
✅ Practical Implementation with Examples
✅ Understanding Strings through Jupyter Notebook
Creating a String
A string is a sequence of characters enclosed within quotes.
Example:
medicine = "Paracetamol"
Python allows us to create strings using single or double quotation marks.
Accessing String Characters
Individual characters can be accessed using their index position.
Example:
medicine[0]
This returns the first character.
Negative indexing can be used to access characters from the end of the string.
Example:
medicine[-1]
String Slicing
Slicing allows us to extract a selected portion of a string.
Example:
medicine[0:4]
This makes it easy to work with specific parts of textual information.
String Operations
In this session, we also understand important operations such as:
Concatenation – joining two or more strings
Repetition – repeating a string multiple times
Membership – checking whether particular text exists in a string
Length – finding the number of characters using len()
Practical Learning Flow
Create String → Access Characters → Indexing → Negative Indexing → Slicing → Operations → Practice with Examples
Strings are widely used when working with:
• Medicine names
• Patient identifiers
• Product information
• Categories
• Labels
• Textual datasets
• User input
• Reports and data processing
Understanding strings creates a strong foundation for further Python programming and data analysis.
