From the Mind’s Illusion to Pure Consciousness
A Malayalam Sufi-folk song about the journey from the restless world of the mind to the quiet light of pure awareness.
The lyrics come from a poem written by my mother. Her words have been gently arranged into song form, keeping her language, images and spirit, so that this meditation could be sung and shared.
✦ THE INNER MEANING ✦
🌑 1. A world where shadows dance
"മനസ്സിലെ നിഴലുകൾ ആടും മായാലോകമിതിൽ"
The song begins inside the mind, a world where shadows dance. These shadows are our fears, worries, regrets, imagined futures and replayed memories. They move and pull at us, yet they have no substance of their own. The poem does not call the world false. It points out how much of what troubles us is a play staged by the mind itself. To know the light within (ഉള്ളിലെ വെളിച്ചം), we must first see the boundaries of this illusion and cross beyond them.
🌕 2. The invitation: "പോരൂ നീ ഒന്നായ് ഉണരാനായ്"
The chorus is an invitation, not an order: “Come, let us awaken as one.” It carries the tenderness of a mother calling her child home. The word ഒന്നായ് (as one) holds two meanings. We awaken together with others, and we awaken into oneness, where the divided, restless mind becomes whole again. The call-and-response form of the song carries this idea: one voice calls, many voices answer.
🌀 3. The hidden universe of vasanas
"അറിയാതെ നമ്മെ നയിച്ചിടും വാസനതൻ മായാപ്രപഞ്ചം"
This is the psychological heart of the song. Vasanas are the deep impressions left by past experiences, habits and desires. Without our knowing, they guide our choices, our reactions and even our likes and dislikes. We believe we are acting freely, yet much of our life is steered by patterns formed long ago. Everyone, in every culture, has asked: “Why do I keep repeating the same mistake?” The poem’s answer is gentle: let the light of awareness (ബോധപ്രകാശം) guide the mind, instead of the mind being guided blindly by old impressions.
🎶 4. From the silent strings
"നിശബ്ദ തന്ത്രികളിൽ നിന്നും അകതാരിലെ ശുദ്ധ ബോധത്തിലേക്ക്"
In the quietest moment of the song, almost everything falls away. The poem speaks of silent strings: strings that still vibrate when no one plucks them. This is an image of awareness itself, the silent presence beneath every thought, always watching and never disturbed. We do not create it; we only return to it. From these silent strings, we move inward to the pure consciousness in the depths of the heart (അകതാര്).
🕊️ 5. Leaving the prison of thoughts
"ചിന്തകൾ തൻ തടവറ തള്ളി, സ്വതന്ത്രമായ് ചിറകടിച്ചുയരാം"
Thoughts, when we believe every one of them, become a prison. We live inside them as if they were the whole world. When we see a thought simply as a thought, the prison door opens and we rise freely on our own wings. The poem then names the deepest knowing: to know the divine consciousness within അപരോക്ഷമായ്, directly and firsthand. This is not belief borrowed from books or others, but truth lived and felt in one’s own experience.
🌅 6. Rest in the shade of peace
"ശാന്തിതൻ തണലിൽ വിശ്രമിക്കാം"
The song does not end in loud victory but in rest. The world of dancing shadows is still there, but we now sit in the shade of peace within it. The final line, "ഉള്ളിലെ ബോധവെളിച്ചത്തെ അറിഞ്ഞിടാം," leaves the listener not with a conclusion but with a quiet invitation: let us come to know the light of awareness within.
✦ WHY THIS MATTERS IN EVERYDAY LIFE ✦
This is not only spiritual philosophy. It is a simple, practical reminder:
Not every thought needs to be believed.
Many of our reactions are old patterns, not present truth.
Beneath the noise of the mind, there is a calm awareness that can watch without fear.
Freedom begins the moment we notice what is driving us.
Whenever the mind feels crowded, anxious or stuck, let this song remind you: you are not the shadows. You are the light that sees them.
✦ THE MUSIC ✦
The song is set in a meditative Sufi-folk style, new to Malayalam devotional music: a warm female voice, tanpura drone, harmonium, sarangi, bansuri, soft handclaps and dholak. It begins in near-silence, rises into a gentle trance of collective awakening, and returns to a single voice resting in stillness. It mirrors the poem’s own journey from restlessness, through freedom, to peace.
