A screw jack, also known as a screw lift, is a mechanical device used to lift heavy loads. It consists of a threaded screw shaft, a nut, and a handle or motor for turning the screw. When the handle or motor is turned, the screw moves up or down, and the load attached to it is lifted or lowered accordingly. Screw jacks are commonly used in industrial and construction applications, such as for lifting heavy equipment or supporting structures. They are also used in automotive repair and maintenance to lift vehicles for repairs or to change tires. Screw jacks are relatively simple and inexpensive compared to other lifting devices, but they have a limited lifting capacity and are often slow and difficult to operate manually. As a result, they are typically used for lighter loads and where precision is not critical.
