A Hotel Bathroom Is Smaller Than Yours (Here's Why It Feels Better)

Think about the last hotel bathroom you liked. It was almost certainly smaller than yours. It very likely had no window at all. A different stranger used it the night before you did, and nobody renovated it in between. And you still felt better in it. That is the whole thing, and it is worth sitting with, because it means the feeling was never about size, or money, or a renovation. A hotel cannot rebuild a bathroom between guests. Everything it does, it does with things you can carry into the room and out again. What's inside: • THE TRAY, which is the single biggest difference between a hotel bathroom and a home one. Not owning less, just gathering the same things onto one tray. It turns a scatter into an arrangement, and the whole lot lifts off in one movement when you wipe. • THE TOWELS ARE THE ROOM. In a hotel they are the only soft thing, so they are the only thing your eye reads as luxury. All one color, stacked rather than draped, and enough of them. The bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house for anyone over sixty. A hotel already builds for a stranger who does not know the room, which is the same problem, and it fits these things as standard for people who are perfectly well. There is nothing to feel about having them at home. • A TOWEL RAIL IS NOT A GRAB BAR. Neither is a soap dish, a shower door, or the edge of a sink. They come off the wall, and people fall holding them. A proper grab bar is fixed into structure and costs very little. • Non slip inside the tub, because wet enamel is one of the slipperiest surfaces in your house • A bath mat that cannot slide, the same rule I gave for the bedroom rug • A handheld shower head, and the real reason for it, which is that it lets you wash sitting down • A shower stool, said without a shred of embarrassment • Towels reachable from inside the shower, so nobody steps onto a wet floor and then reaches across the room • A light you can turn on before you walk in, and a low night light for the small hours • THE DOOR. If it opens inward and somebody falls against it, nobody can get in. Rehanging it to open outward costs very little and has genuinely saved lives. FREE TO DO TODAY: clear the surfaces onto one tray, put the personal things away, clear the floor, clean the mirror properly, and use one scent instead of four. Start there before you spend anything at all. RENTING? The tray, the towels, the floor, the mirror, the scent, non slip mats and a stool need no permission and no holes. For a grab bar, do ask, and it is worth knowing that many landlords say yes, because it lowers their risk too. Honest limits: I am not a designer and I am not a contractor, so anything involving the wall itself is a job for somebody qualified. And some bathrooms are simply small and dark, and no arrangement changes that. But a small dark room can still feel cared for, and a hotel proves it every single night. I read every comment.
