Mister Rogers shares that actress Margaret Hamilton will be visiting later today. He shows photos of her in multiple films and plays, including pictures of her in her most well-known role: The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz.
Mister Rogers visits Elsie Neal to retrieve a witch costume for Margaret. Elsie shares that she was afraid of the Wicked Witch when she was a child, and her mother taught her to overcome those fears through "playing them out" with a handmade witch's hat. Mister Rogers and Elsie make a witch's hat together with construction paper and discuss that playing about something is one of the best ways of understanding how you feel about it.
Back at the house, Margaret Hamilton has arrived for her visit! Mister Rogers asks Margaret how she felt playing the Wicked Witch. She shares that she loved to dress up as a witch for Halloween as a little girl and was very happy to play one in The Wizard of Oz. They discuss that making the movie was fun, but also a lot of hard work. Margaret talks about how it was challenging to work with the green makeup on her face and hands. She had to have someone help her eat lunch, and she had to be careful not to get green makeup on her costume. She also shares she didn't think that it would be so scary for some kids to see her acting like the Wicked Witch, and sometimes she's a bit sad because they're afraid of her — but it's just pretend, and anyone can play pretend. Together, Margaret and Mister Rogers play dress up, and Margaret shares how she puts on her Wicked Witch costume. Mister Rogers remarks that playing dress-up with Margaret helps him understand that she is a real person who got dressed up to play a character, like a Halloween costume. As Margaret leaves, Mister Rogers decides to play some make-believe about her as a princess lizard witch.
In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Princess Margaret Lizard visits her old college friend, King Friday. Lady Aberlin is surprised that she seems to be such a lovely individual, because Daniel Striped Tiger is very afraid of lizards. Princess Margaret Lizard offers to have a talk with Daniel and the two head off to Daniel's clock. Lady Aberlin tells Daniel how the princess is very nice and she wants to tell him about her herself. As Daniel and Princess Margaret Lizard talk, they realize that that there is no reason for them to be afraid of each other. Princess Margaret Lizard shares that many people wonder about lizards, and they would feel better and have a better understanding if they asked about them, as Daniel has. Daniel enjoys their visit and hopes to meet her again. Before she leaves for the castle, Princess Margaret Lizard introduces herself to Lady Elaine Fairchilde, who is thrilled to learn that she is a special lizard who can change into different beings. She does a "switch to the witch" as she magically changes into Princess Margaret H. Witch.
Back at the house, Mister Rogers says that witches in movies, books or TV are always pretend, and it's important when growing up to be able to tell the difference between what's pretend and what's real. He walks around his television home and shares that everything in it is real, and that in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, everything is pretend.
