Day 8 (15/10/26) Today we will leave Tingri (where Mt Everest lies on northern side of the Himalayas). Going back to Shigatse, this time we will travel down the 108 bends, the same road which we used to go up to Everest base camp. Today is the 2nd and last chance for us to take pictures and videos of Mt Everest (for this trip). Long journey back to Shigatse with a visit to the Tashilhunpo Monastery. “Tashilhunpo Monastery Maitreya Temple • Location: Samzhubzê District, Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region, China • The Deity: Known as Jampa in Tibetan Buddhism, Maitreya is revered as the Future Buddha who will one day appear on Earth to bring back the pure teachings of the Dharma. • The Statue: The Jampa Buddha Hall houses a monumental, world-renowned bronze statue of Maitreya. • Key Dimensions: The gilded bronze statue stands 26.2 meters tall (about 86 feet), sits on a 3.5-meter lotus seat, and is adorned with over 1,400 precious and semi-precious ornaments. It was cast by 110 craftsmen over a four-year period. • History: Founded in 1447 by Gendun Drup (the First Dalai Lama), Tashilhunpo serves as the traditional seat of the successive Panchen Lamas.”b
