Romans Chapter 2

In this lesson, Bible Teacher Will Flucker continues his exposition of Paul's argument that EVERYONE is guilty before God. Continuing his discourse from chapter one, Paul turns his attention from the immoral person to the so-called moral person, that is, the person who recognizes good and evil - either by their own code, or that of some false God. The 'moral' person tries to keep that code, and he judges others against it as well. This amounts to trying to attain God's perfect righteousness in one's own strength - an impossibility - while ignoring the grace-gift of salvation, which includes the imputed, perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ. Paul makes clear that such a 'moral' person is also condemned, his own conscience and thoughts bearing witness against him. Later in the chapter, Paul turns also to his brethren of Jewish heritage to pronounce that even they, having received the special revelation of the Word of God, are also convicted of unrighteousness, because having God's law and failing to perform it perfectly throughout one's life falls short of God's perfect standard. This session also exposits God's judgment on all unrighteousness. Understanding Chapter 1:18 through 3:18 is essential to appreciating one's desperate need for the righteousness of God.
