Despite two big crashes before lunch, this was a considerable improvement over last years event! A good set of grids for part 2 of the 750MC's championship finales, certainly larger than that of Castle Combe last week, and one of the better car events to end the season at Mallory Park.
After what might be the most calm set of qualifying sessions all year, we went straight into Mighty Mini Racing for the first time here since 2012! Plus a decent field of cars with this series now finding its feet again. Paul Jenkins would win the opening race after the threat from Michael Barber ended with mechanical issues for the latter, with Matthew Baker and Morgan Harris completing the podium spot across a surprisingly spread out field that split into individual battles. Unfortunately one particularly close fought battle ended with an optimistic line gone wrong into Gerards for Trevor Peters, who was attempting to pass Harris for 3rd and sadly ended up shortening a very nice looking Mini Clubman by a few feet, subsequently stopping the race. Race 2's slightly inverted grid gave us 4 wide into Gerards on lap 1, and by the end of the race we had a Jenkins family lockout on the podium. Paul Jenkins won, despite repeated spectacular attempts and off track excursions by Toby Jenkins to win the race, who ended up second, with John Jenkins came home 3rd.
The opening Swift Sport Challenge race had some great, but unfortunately too erratic racing! Start attempt 1 of race 1 failed immediately with one car in the wall. Start 2 succeeded but a rather unnecessary accident took Jake Boydell out of the race, and safety car that was called resulted in big accident down the back for Issy Woolley who thankfully walked away from a battered Suzuki. James Saggers was pronounced the winner, with Lewis Stannard 2nd and Aaron Mullen 3rd. A far better display greeted us in race 2, with what was one of the best races this season at Mallory Park. Too much going on in this race to write about, but Saggers won again, narrowly beating Mullen in 2nd and Graham Coomes 3rd.
A slightly late 2000's-esque sized field of cars for the 750 Formula races was a surprise, with race 1's win comfortably going to Dave Reid from Ed Pither and Dave Facer. In Race 2 Pither did attempt to make Reid work for his win but the car slowed at the hairpin allowing Reid to run off and win a second time, with Bill Cowley coming home 2nd and taking the 750 Formula Championship in the process, and 3rd was Dave Facer.
From small fields to one of the biggest Sport Specials fields in a decade here at Mallory Park and perhaps the two best races of the day. Andrew Hayward and Stewart Mutch deserved trophies of their own for the racing they put on in both contests, but it was the battle between Richard Webb and Martyn Gambling that decided the winners, with Webb managing to win both races after Gambling suffered issues in race 1, but managed 2nd in race 2. Wayne Armsden was 3rd in race 1, and Marcus Crook took 3rd for the second race.
Filling the spot of good grids and close racing that 750 Formula usually holds was the Historic 750 Formula series. Both races saw Sam Wright narrowly beat Ian Elliott top the top of the podium. 3rd in Race 1 was Gary Brandon after a freak fire took Richard Verheyden out of the race and a restart was required. Jo Zosso managed to steal 3rd of Brandon in the 2nd race.
And finally, probably the smallest field of Formula Vee's for a very long time at Mallory Park. Maciej Hamera walked away with the race 1 win fairly easily with John Hughes 2nd and a very close battle between Pete Belsey and Vaughn Jones ended with the latter in 3rd. Race 2 was much closer with Hamera struggling with gears at the hairpin ending in him being passed for the lead, only to retake it back again, and lose it a second time passing a backmarker. For the first time I can remember, the race was then stopped for the errant nosecone of Rich Walsh, giving us a top 3 of John Hughes, Vaughn Jones and Pete Belsey.
A slightly damp ending to what was a good meeting, despite the pre-lunch mess!
