On Day 11 (77km) of my bikepacking trip through Italy, the route took me deeper into the stunning Basilicata region. The landscape changed completely into something unlike anything I had seen before, the Calanchi, unique clay hills and deep erosion gullies that felt like cycling on the moon with a classic Western movie vibe.
It looked incredibly dry under the Italian sun, though recent storms had definitely left their mark. Some roads were officially closed, but I decided to push through anyway, tackling several sections filled with deep puddles and thick mud! Fortunately, I made it through without any invisible potholes or mishaps.
On the physical side, my hip was steadily improving. Getting on and off the bike felt much smoother, though my glutes were fatiguing a bit faster on the climbs. When I finally reached the top of the hill at B&B Soprattutto, I was so glad I hadn't added any extra kilometers, that final climb was tough enough!
Next stop: heading down to Villapiana on the Ionian Sea.
