Before we can dive into the tracks and wires of York’s lost tramway, we have to reach the starting line! In today’s episode, I’m parking up near the Knavesmire to begin a cross-town trek toward the historic village of Acomb.
This isn't just a walk; it’s a journey through time and boundaries. We’ll be:
Crossing the atmospheric Little Hob Moor and Hob Moor.
Leaving York as we step back into the historic West Riding of Yorkshire (Acomb was only absorbed into York in 1937!).
Searching for locations for the Ultimate Historic West Riding Bingo Challenge.
Stopping for a quiet moment on the Acomb Village Green.
Exploring the hidden history within St Stephen’s Churchyard.
Join me as we scout the terrain where the Acomb tram route once ended, setting the stage for our deep dive into the city's transport heritage in the next video.
Acomb History Snippet:
Acomb’s roots go deep -it was mentioned in the Domesday Book as "Achum." For centuries, it was a rural farming village separate from York. The Village Green still maintains that "out of town" feel, while St Stephen’s Church stands on a site of worship that dates back to Anglo-Saxon times (though the current building is a beautiful 19th-century rebuild).
