(9 Sep 1971) RR7136 UK SHIPBUILDING: CRISIS ON THE CLYDE Many British shipyards are struggling for their existence, especially on the Upper Clyde, on the west coast of Scotland, where giants such as the "Queen Mary" "Queen Elizabeth" and, more recently the QE2 were built. Edward Heath's Conservative government has decided to provide no more money to prop up the company's shaky finances. As a result, yards will close, putting even more men out of work in an area which has one of the highest unemployment rates in Britain. So far, the men have refused to accept the decision, and they've begun a "work-in".
