Welcome to the HERHealth Podcast! In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Stefanie Hunt-Kennedy and Dr. Yvonne Simpson from the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research at the University of New Brunswick to discuss the intersections of gender-based violence (GBV) and disability, and the structural factors that contribute to the heightened vulnerability of disabled women and girls. The conversation explores how ableism functions as a form of structural power and privilege, shaping both the prevalence of GBV and the barriers disabled women and girls face when accessing support, safety, and justice. It also examines New Brunswick’s declaration of GBV as an epidemic and systemic issue, while highlighting the need for greater awareness and action to address the unique experiences of disabled survivors.
