She Insisted on Twice the Firewood and He Grumbled — The 7-Day Blizzard Burned Every Pile but His On the third Tuesday of November, Nora Voss steps down from the Millhaven supply wagon in Hatchford without assistance and looks at the town the way a person looks at a thing whose fair price she has not yet decided. Four years of teaching in Millhaven ended when Gerald Pratt's mother told the town that Nora had done the pursuing, that the whole business was "a little sad and a little embarrassing for everyone involved." In December, she counts the Hennessey firewood delivery to the Cade place and finds it short, and when the first storm comes, Daniel Cade is down to four days of wood with two children inside and the road closed. By spring she insists on twice the firewood and he grumbles that it is a lot of wood, while Mrs. Aldine Foss tells Croft's counter it is either poor judgment or something more calculated. On the sixth of February the sky goes white again, and the wind does not stop for nine days. The house on the north road keeps both fires burning, because there is twice enough. Daniel Cade had understood her before anyone, the morning he found her note tucked between two logs in his woodpile. Foresight does not look like much until the road closes. It counts the delivery, writes the number down, and waits. This story is presented for entertainment and historical storytelling purposes. Characters, names, and events are fictional, while period details and practical techniques are based on documented historical practices. Have you ever been called foolish for preparing too much?
