College Football Week 0 Recap College football returned in Week 0 with a smaller-than-usual schedule but plenty of storylines. From Dublin to Los Angeles, the opening weekend featured a new coaching era, an impressive FBS debut, dominant wins, dramatic comebacks and several teams leaving with questions to answer. North Carolina Opens the Belichick Era With a Win North Carolina defeated TCU 15-10 in Dublin, giving Bill Belichick a victory in his first game with the Tar Heels. The defensive battle was decided by discipline, field position and situational execution rather than offensive fireworks. North Carolina did enough to secure the win and provided an encouraging first step in a new era. The Tar Heels will eventually need more offensive production against tougher competition, but beginning the Belichick era with a victory gives the program momentum. USC Showcases Explosive Offense No. 14 USC defeated San José State 42-26 after building a commanding 35-3 lead. Quarterback Jayden Maiava completed 25 of 29 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns, while Trent Mosley caught seven passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. The Trojans finished with more than 500 yards of offense. However, USC’s fourth quarter raised concerns. San José State scored 23 points in the final period, with quarterback Luke Weaver accounting for three touchdowns. The comeback did not change the outcome, but it highlighted defensive inconsistencies USC will need to address before facing stronger opponents. North Dakota State Makes an Immediate FBS Statement North Dakota State could not have asked for a better introduction to FBS football, defeating Jacksonville State 33-7. The Bison controlled the game physically, particularly on defense and in the running game. Quarterback Nathan Hayes helped lead the offense, while the defense prevented Jacksonville State from establishing any sustained rhythm. One game cannot determine whether North Dakota State can become a consistent FBS contender, but the debut immediately suggested that the program is capable of competing at its new level. Virginia Dominates NC State Virginia delivered one of Week 0’s biggest statements with a 34-8 victory over NC State. The Cavaliers controlled the game on both sides of the ball, with their defense consistently disrupting the Wolfpack. The result gives Virginia early momentum and puts the program on the radar as a potential ACC factor. For NC State, the loss creates questions about its offense and ability to generate consistency. Stanford Survives Hawaii Comeback Stanford defeated Hawaii 37-27 after the Warriors erased a substantial deficit and threatened to complete a dramatic comeback. Hawaii showed resilience and created late momentum, but Stanford regained control and finished the job. The result was an important season-opening victory for Stanford, while Hawaii was left to wonder what might have been after coming so close to pulling off the comeback. Memphis Edges UNLV Memphis defeated UNLV 27-21 in a game that left the Rebels with plenty to evaluate. UNLV held an advantage earlier but struggled to maintain offensive consistency as the game progressed. Quarterback Jackson Arnold showed flashes of his potential, but pressure on the offensive line became an issue, particularly after an injury affected the unit. Memphis capitalized in the second half and secured the win. UNLV has enough talent to recover, but the offensive line will need to improve quickly if the Rebels are going to meet preseason expectations. Mountain West Faces Early Questions The Mountain West endured a difficult Week 0, with San José State falling to USC, Hawaii losing to Stanford and UNLV dropping its game to Memphis. North Dakota State provided the conference’s biggest positive after its impressive FBS debut. Week 0 rarely provides definitive answers, but it offers the first clues of the season. USC demonstrated that its offense has the firepower to challenge elite opponents, while its defense showed areas that need improvement. North Dakota State immediately established itself as an intriguing new FBS program. Virginia generated early ACC momentum, and North Carolina began the Belichick era with a victory. Meanwhile, Hawaii and UNLV showed flashes of potential but could not finish their respective games. The preseason predictions are now being replaced by actual results, and some expectations have already changed. With the majority of the 2026 schedule still ahead, Week 0 was only the opening chapter. Final Takeaway Week 0 may have been smaller than a traditional college football Saturday, but it delivered exactly what an opening weekend should: storylines and questions. North Dakota State announced its arrival. North Carolina began a fascinating new era with a win. Virginia made a statement. USC showcased an explosive offense while revealing defensive concerns. Hawaii and UNLV demonstrated potential but failed to close out their games. #collegefootball #cfb #usc
