How do you build a spacecraft that lands on the Moon and then launches itself off again — with no launch tower, no ground crew and one engine with no backup? We rebuild Grumman's Apollo Lunar Module in 3D: two spacecraft stacked together, a throttleable descent engine, a cabin skin about a third of a millimetre thick in places, gold foil blankets instead of heat shields, and a crew that flew standing up because the seats were cut to save weight. Then we ride along with real NASA film: Spider over the Earth on Apollo 9, Eagle's computer alarms and boulder field on Apollo 11, the dust storm of an Apollo 15 landing, Aquarius saving the Apollo 13 crew with a cardboard-and-tape 'mailbox', the liftoff seen from inside the window, and where the six descent stages — and the leftover landers — are today. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 Intro 0:36 A Second Spaceship 1:26 Two Spacecraft in One 2:25 The Weight War 3:41 Built by Hand, Tested in Space 4:37 Twelve Minutes: Landing Eagle 6:11 Apollo 13: The Lifeboat 7:05 One Engine, No Backup: Liftoff 8:32 A Bigger Lander 9:13 What's Left & Recap 📚 Sources NASA History Office, '60 Years Ago: NASA Decides on Lunar Orbit Rendezvous for Moon Land… NASA SP-4205 'Chariots for Apollo' (Brooks, Grimwood, Swenson, 1979) ch.6 NASA SP-4205 ch.7-3 Wikipedia 'Apollo Lunar Module' (accessed 2026-10-25) Guinness World Records, 'Thinnest manned spacecraft hull' Christian Science Monitor correction (2001-06-18) Smithsonian NASM, LM-2 object record and curator blog Apollo Lunar Surface Journal, Apollo 11 'The First Lunar Landing' Apollo Lunar Surface Journal, Apollo 11 'Return to Orbit' space1.com 'Surface Sensing Probe' and NASA Apollo lunar lander technical brief 📷 Photo credits (author · license) are shown on each photo in the video.
