A polynomial comes from "poly" (meaning many) and "nomial" (meaning terms). It is an algebraic expression consisting of variables, coefficients, and constants. The Golden Rule: The exponents of the variables must be non-negative integers (0, 1, 2, 3...). 🚫 What is NOT a polynomial? Expressions with negative exponents (x⁻²), fractional exponents (square root of 2), by or variables in the denominator (1/x). 2. Types of Polynomials by Number of Terms We classify polynomials based on how many parts are separated by plus (+) or minus (-) signs: Monomial: Exactly 1 term (e.g., 5x, 3, -2x⁵). Binomial: Exactly 2 terms (e.g., x + 5, 3x² - 7). Trinomial: Exactly 3 terms (e.g., x² + 5x - 2) 8).Polynomial: The general name used for expressions, especially those with 4 or more terms.3. Types of Polynomials by DegreeThe degree is the highest exponent of the variable in the expression. Constant Polynomial: Degree 0 (e.g., 7, because it's 7x⁰). Linear Polynomial: Degree 1 (e.g., 3x + 2). Quadratic Polynomial: Degree 2 (e.g., x² + 5x + 6). Cubic Polynomial: Degree 3 (e.g., 4x³ - x² + 3x+2). Quartic / Bi-quadratic Polynomial: Degree 4 (e.g., 3x⁴ + 1).
