Birding in Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, India | Frogmouth, Slender Loris & Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl!

The Sri Lanka Frogmouth, or Singaleserfroskemunn (Batrachostomus moniliger), is easily one of the coolest birds I have encountered. Being strictly nocturnal, it spends the entire day sitting motionless on a branch, usually roosting in pairs. The male is grey, while the female shows more brown and rufous tones. Together, they blend perfectly into their surroundings, making them exceptionally hard to spot in the forest. We were lucky to have an outstanding guide, Abraham, at Thattekad Bird Sanctuary in Kerala. He knew exactly what habitat to look in. The birds prefer short forest trees, often positioning themselves among dead leaves where their camouflage is most effective. Thattekad exceeded all expectations and may well be our favourite birding location in India. For our entire time in Thattekad, we stayed at Sanctuary View Homestay, which is located inside the bird sanctuary. The owners were beyond helpful and kind. With beautiful views, birds right outside our door, and wonderful hosts, we could not have asked for more. Thank you so much.
