Raw Delta blues guitar instrumentals — Mississippi 1936 bottleneck slide, stomp and harmonica for focus, studying, work and late-night reading.
Slow acoustic country blues with no vocals: prewar slide guitar blues music for deep work, study sessions, coding, driving and winding down.
Sorghum Mill Night at Itta Bena — a long cool October night in 1936 at a sorghum mill on the edge of a picked-over cotton field outside Itta Bena, Mississippi, where a grey mule walks circles turning the iron cane press, the green juice boils down in a long copper pan over a trench fire, neighbours bring their cane by wagon, the landlord's man counts his share and a guitar man plays by the furnace until the last batch of syrup is poured at dawn. Wagons heaped with cane rolling into the mill yard at sundown, a grey mule on the sweep pole, stalks crushed flat between the iron rollers, green juice running into an oak barrel, a trench fire of split oak under the pan, a copper pan fourteen feet long, the syrup maker skimming green foam with a wooden paddle, a guitar man on an upturned bucket by the furnace, children chewing raw cane and spitting the pith into the dark, the sweet heap of pummy behind the shed, an owl calling over the picked rows, the landlord's man counting his share in tin buckets, a lantern on the sweep post, the first frost on the wagon boards, a lone rider passing on the gravel road without stopping, the syrup turning from green to amber, cold biscuits dipped in the warm new syrup, the tired mule unhitched and led to the trough — and the last batch poured into cans as the sky turns grey, with the mill quiet again by morning.
The set plays through twice, so put it on and leave it running. No talking, no ads inside the mix, no interruptions.
Solo open-D bottleneck slide guitar, foot-stomp on dirt, upright bass, cross-harp harmonica and evening crickets. No singing.
