Behind the wall at airport check-in, Dubai International hides more than 175 km (109 mi) of baggage track. What steers your suitcase through that maze to the right plane is just ten digits on its bag tag. This is how an airport baggage handling system works: what the barcode on your bag tag really says, how the machine sorts your bag onto the right flight, and where delayed and lost luggage really goes wrong. We follow one suitcase from the check-in desk to the plane. On the way: the licence-plate number behind the barcode, RFID tags, hold-bag scanners, a robot store for early bags, the sorter, and a transfer tunnel faster than the trains next door. Then we look at what happened when Denver and Heathrow Terminal 5 bet on the machines.
