Fujian is a major province for traditional Chinese opera, with a wide variety of opera forms. One of the main genres in southern Fujian is Gaojia opera, known for its pervasive use of "clownish" behavior to find beauty in the grotesque. It holds a prestigious place in the theatrical world. This documentary, produced by Fujian Television, captures the later years of one of the four renowned "clown actors" and drag clown performers, Ke Xianxi. Through his memories, the film explores the historical tradition of this form of Chinese opera, while also examining the current struggles of opera performers in China, as seen through the career of his top disciple, Lai Zongmao. It delves into the challenges of preserving and passing down this traditional art form. The documentary traces Ke Xianxi's life in opera, including his experience during the Cultural Revolution when he was persecuted, expelled from the Party, ousted from his opera troupe, and sent to labor camps. It also documents his final days, as even in his nineties, he remained deeply concerned about the future of Gaojia opera and longed to return to the stage. He passed away at the age of 95 on the rehearsal stage. At the time of filming, Lai Zongmao, the former deputy head of the Jinjiang Gaojia Opera Troupe and a recipient of the Wenhua Performance Award, had five years left before retirement. Although he continued to perform, his life had become difficult due to a decline in subsidized performances and several months of unpaid wages. He resorted to shooting advertisements for local hotels to make ends meet. By the end of the film, Lai Zongmao had left his position, officially labeled as "awaiting retirement," and transitioned into running a traditional clay pot stew restaurant.
