Esther Rukoo, a single mother of five from Kampi Turkana, faced significant economic challenges in providing for her family. With limited and unreliable sources of income, she struggled to meet basic household needs, including paying school fees for her children in both primary and secondary school. Her financial situation made it difficult to invest in sustainable livelihood activities that could improve her family's well-being. The Cardinal Vaughan Project is empowering vulnerable households by providing start-up support for income-generating activities (IGAs) and promoting climate-smart agricultural practices to improve household incomes and food security. Through financial assistance, training, and ongoing mentorship, participants are equipped with the skills and resources needed to establish small businesses and engage in productive farming. The project has contributed to significant improvements in the livelihoods of vulnerable households by increasing income, strengthening food security, and promoting economic self-reliance. Through support for income-generating activities and agriculture, participants have been able to establish sustainable sources of income, improve household welfare, and invest in their families' future. For Esther Rukoo, the support received enabled her to start a small retail business and later venture into maize farming on leased land. The successful harvest enabled her to pay school fees for her five children in both primary and secondary school, meet essential household needs, and reinvest in farming. As a result, she has continued farming and is currently cultivating one acre despite challenges related to limited access to quality seeds. Beyond individual success stories, the project has strengthened the resilience of participating households by improving their capacity to generate sustainable incomes, support their children's education, enhance household food security, and reduce dependence on external assistance. These outcomes demonstrate the positive impact of investing in sustainable livelihoods to create lasting transformational change for vulnerable families and the wider community. She established a small retail shop at her home, which gradually improved her household income. She later expanded into farming by leasing land and planting Kenya Seed maize. The successful harvest enabled her to pay her children's school fees, meet household expenses, and reinvest in farming. Although she is currently cultivating one acre due to limited access to quality seeds, she remains optimistic and committed to expanding her farming activities in the future.
