Media Mentors - Rita Brent

Many students begin their careers in local media without realizing those early experiences can open doors far beyond the newsroom. This session will explore how foundational skills in radio, storytelling and live performance can translate into entertainment, writing, comedy and national platforms. Drawing from a journey that began in Mississippi radio and evolved into award-winning comedy, music and television writing, this mentor will discuss how to pivot strategically, build a personal brand and take bold risks while staying rooted in authenticity. Participants will gain insight into how to grow beyond their first role, leverage transferable skills and create opportunities that align with their long-term vision. The Roy Howard Community Journalism Center hosts monthly Media Mentors sessions to connect students with media professionals and expand their professional networks. The program introduces students to a wide range of careers within the media industry through guest speakers who share insights into their career paths, discuss the skills needed in today's media landscape and engage with attendees through an interactive Q&A session.  Media Mentors is free and open to the public.
