Migingo Island is the world's most crowded island — and probably the most unlikely town in Africa.
Here is the best description: #lake #fisherman #fish #boat #island #shorts #lakevictoria ##migingoisland
1. Size & Location:
Located in Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake. Technically in Kenya (Migori County), but claimed by Uganda too — it's only 2 hours by speedboat from Kenya, 6 hours from Uganda.
It is TINY. Only 2,000 square meters / 0.49 acres — half the size of a football pitch. It was actually underwater until the early 1990s when lake levels dropped and the rock appeared.
2. Population:
About 500-1,000 people live on that rock in corrugated iron shacks stacked on top of each other, like you see in your photo. That is a density of ∼250,000 people per km².
80% Kenyan, 20% Ugandan. Mostly fishermen.
3. Why people live there:
Money. The waters around Migingo are the richest fishing grounds left in Lake Victoria for *Nile Perch*. One good catch like the two fish in your boat can be worth more than a month's salary on thed. Nile Perch can fetch over $300/kg for export.
4. Life on the island:
There are no cars, no roads, no running water. Just a maze of tin alleys.
But it has 4 bars, a brothel, a pharmacy, a beauty salon, and an open-air casino. It is called "the iron-clad island" because the whole island glitters with iron sheets.
no hospital..
5. The Dispute:
Known as "Africa's smallest ar." In 2008 Uganda sent soldiers to take the island, lowered the Kenyan flag and raised theirs. Kenya and Uganda almost went to war over a half-acre rock. In 2016 they agreed to share it and both tax the fishermen.
In short: *A half-acre rock, 500 men, no women allowed to stay permanently, surrounded by fish w glance.#subscribe #NGANYvillagelife #villagevlog #village #kenyanyoutuber #kenya #automobile #matatuculture #nganya Full Documentary Of #RAW #Africa
