He learned to play the piano with his grandmothers; also played violin and tenor saxophone. He began playing professionally with Frank Davis in 1933, then continued his career with Chester Boone (1933-36) and Milton Larkin (1936-42). He replaced Illinois Jacques in Lionel Hampton's band (1942-47), then gained a reputation, left the band and formed his own band, but due to back surgery (1948) he was forced to suspend performances for several years. In 1951 he reorganized his band; was active until in 1956 he was involved in a car accident in which he suffered serious injuries. He resumed performing with the band in 1957-58, then returned to Houston, where he ran the Ebony Club and occasionally led his own big bands in the 1960s, although illness kept him from performing. He performed at the Club Magnavox in Houston in the summer of 1970. In 1973, he performed with Illinois Jacques at Town Hall in New York, resuming his career; the same year he went on his first and most successful tour to Europe. He toured Europe again with Hampton (1978). In the 1980s, he performed extensively in the United States and Europe, often with the Texas Tenors, which included Jacques and Buddy Tate. He died March 24, 1989, at the age of 70 in his hometown of Houston.
