Fruko Y Sus Tesos - "Nací En La Barriada"

Featured on the Putumayo collection "¡Salsa!" Originally released on March 24th, 2009. From the liner notes: Ernesto “Fruko” Estrada began his musical career at the age of 15 when he joined the legendary cumbia group Los Corraleros de Majagual. Performing with Los Corraleros in 1968 gave him his first opportunity to travel to New York and participate in the city’s burgeoning salsa scene. Estrada and musical director Mario “Pachanga” Rincón started Fruko y Sus Tesos in 1970 in an effort to create a sound similar to New York’s Fania All-Stars. Over the following 38 years, Fruko y SusTesos have retained a firm foothold in the upper echelons of the international salsa scene. “Nací en la Barriada” (Born in the Neighborhood) was featured on Estrada’s 2000 release Power Salsa, and it quickly earned a spot along much older, time-tested tunes as one of his greatest hits. The song tells of the challenges of growing up in Colombia’s poor urban neighborhoods. “The street is not like a jungle / That you can cross / Unworried and relaxed that nothing bad will happen / It is different during the day / It is a hell at night where only the brave dare go.”
