Dr Lucy Johnstone spoke about The Power Threat Meaning Framework, which was developed by a group of British Psychologists and mental health service users, and offers tools to create new, hopeful narratives about the reasons for distress, believing that with the right support, we can be active agents in our own lives rather than seen as victims of a medical illness.
About PTMF: A conceptual alternative to the diagnostic model of mental illness, PTMF looks at how power operates in our lives and situates emotional distress within social contexts, especially where there is injustice and inequality.

ABOUT MH360°
MH360°, a mental health festival, is The Red Door’s annual flagship event that brings the focus back to where it belongs- empowering individuals to explore what’s at the heart of their emotional distress and make informed choices on how they want to heal, with a firm understanding of societal factors and structural forces that impact our lives. The festival celebrates diversity, explores alternative frameworks of the mind, of healing and well-being and is envisioned as a life affirming celebration of our human-ness, of the fact that suffering is real but so is the possibility of flourishing.
Our festival is a rights-based, inclusive and diverse celebratory safe space for people of all hues. We take a 360-degree approach – to healing, acknowledging neurodiversity & social intersectionality. The festival will be a mix of conversations, talks, workshops and public participation events, with a special focus on marginalized voices.
MH360° is aimed at reaching out to all those who want to seek help, but don’t know how and who to turn to. It will help them understand the many options that exist so that they are able to make an informed choice.
The Red Door
The Red Door (TRD) was set up in 2011 by Reshma Valliappan and Aparna Sanyal. The idea behind TRD came from what was already a growing movement across the world – to form an intersectional response to emotional distress. This understanding came from cutting-edge research in the social and neuro sciences, being used in successful models of recovery in mental illness in different parts of the world.
Over the years, The Red Door has become an important voice for advocacy in mental health. It has presented at UN conventions, been part of government consultations and shared its perspectives at multiple civil society conferences.
In the past, we have worked with street children, professionals and students. We have organized workshops, events and a festival on mental health.
Reshma is an artist, with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia, while Aparna is a documentary filmmaker.
