MapQuest looked like a relic from the era of printed directions — until it suddenly surged from #128 to #1 overall on the U.S. App Store. The spike followed MapQuest’s public decision to keep using the name Lake Ontario after the U.S. federal government adopted “Lake America”; Google and Apple later reflected the federal name for U.S. users. Sensor Tower estimated roughly 632,000 U.S. downloads after the change, while MapQuest said it saw more than 1.5 million installs across the U.S. and Canada. In this episode of Millennial Reacts, I go back to the days of printed MapQuest directions, standalone GPS units, my very real Garminfone era, and the transition to Google and Apple Maps. Then I try the modern MapQuest app, meet the retro Questies, and ask the bigger question: how did a company that helped define digital navigation survive every generation of navigation technology and suddenly become relevant again?
