What started as a small hidden leak turned into a problem that had apparently been going on for MONTHS without me realizing it! 💦
After finally opening up my Sundance McKinley hot tub and investigating, I discovered the culprit — the wet end of the hot tub pump was leaking and badly corroded.
Instead of buying all the individual seals and rebuilding the old corroded wet end, I found a great deal on a complete brand-new wet end assembly that already included new seals. So I decided to replace the entire thing.
In this video, I take you through the repair from beginning to end — including a few things I discovered along the way that could save you some serious frustration if you're doing this repair yourself.
🔧 IN THIS VIDEO:
• Finding a hidden hot tub pump leak
• How I siphon/drain the hot tub using the spa jets
• Removing the pump motor from the hot tub
• Removing the old leaking and corroded wet end
• Installing a brand-new wet end and seals
• Reinstalling the pump assembly
• Protecting the wood underneath the pump from future water damage
• Tips I learned while doing the repair
• Testing everything after the repair
While I had the pump removed, I also noticed that the wood underneath the motor mounting bracket wasn't adequately protected against water. After having a leak sitting there for months, I definitely didn't want to put everything back together and ignore it.
So while everything was apart, I cleaned up the area and applied a waterproof protective coating/sealant to the wood to help protect it against future leaks, moisture and rot.
If your hot tub is losing water, leaking underneath the cabinet, showing corrosion around the pump, or you suspect the wet end or pump seals are leaking, hopefully this video gives you a much better idea of what you're getting into before you start taking things apart.
Sometimes replacing the complete wet end can make a lot more sense than rebuilding an old, heavily corroded one — especially when you can find the complete assembly at a good price.
