In April of 1775, about seventy farmers stood on a village green in Massachusetts and watched hundreds of British soldiers march toward them. Eight years later, the most powerful empire on Earth gave up thirteen colonies. How did the Americans win?
This is the history of the American Revolution, from the Stamp Act and the Boston Tea Party to Lexington and Concord, the Declaration of Independence, Valley Forge, Saratoga, and the final surrender at Yorktown. You'll see how George Washington kept a struggling army alive, how France changed the war, and how the Treaty of Paris created the United States.
We also look at who was left out of the Revolution's promise, including enslaved Americans and Native nations, and why the ideas in the Declaration of Independence are still debated today.
This is the first video in our American Revolution series. In the next videos, we'll go deeper into every major turning point. Subscribe so you don't miss them, and tell us in the comments: which moment do you think changed the war the most?
