NEET PG 2025 vs 2026 — Round 1 Detailed Discussion 2025 R1 vs 2026 R1 — What actually changed? This is not just another cutoff list. For the first time, we are looking at the Round 1 closing ranks of NEET PG 2025 and 2026 side-by-side, branch-wise and category-wise, to understand where the counselling trend has actually shifted. The most important point is that a positive shift does not mean the branch became “better” or “worse.” It means that the closing rank moved to a higher number in 2026, indicating relatively more relaxed competition at that point. A negative shift indicates a tougher closing rank compared with 2025. 🔥 Clinical Branches — Major Observations Radiology: For General category, the closing rank moved from 2,920 in 2025 to 3,058 in 2026, a positive shift of +138. The shift is considerably larger in several reserved categories. General Medicine: General moved from 3,822 → 4,703, showing a +881 shift. Similar positive movement is visible across EWS, OBC, SC, ST and PwD categories. Dermatology: One of the striking movements is seen here — General moved from 2,725 → 5,628, a +2,903 shift. This represents a significant change in the Round 1 closing pattern. Paediatrics: General moved from 7,071 → 9,574, giving a +2,503 shift, with positive movement across the major categories. Anaesthesiology: General moved from 19,028 → 24,614, a +5,586 shift. This is one of the notable movements among the major clinical branches. General Surgery: General moved from 11,507 → 14,012, showing a +2,505 shift. Obstetrics & Gynaecology: General moved from 9,714 → 14,190, a +4,476 shift. Orthopaedics: General moved from 12,429 → 15,591, a +3,162 shift. Ophthalmology: General moved from 16,969 → 19,165, a +2,196 shift. ENT: General moved from 17,851 → 20,996, showing a +3,145 shift. 📈 The Bigger Picture When we look beyond individual branches, a very clear pattern emerges: Several major MD/MS branches show positive movement in Round 1 of 2026 compared with 2025. But the movement is not uniform across every category, branch or course. There are also important negative shifts. For example: Geriatrics General: 10,451 → 7,573 (−2,878) Tropical Medicine General: 11,991 → 11,204 (−787) Emergency Medicine General: 13,772 → 12,626 (−1,146) PM&R General: 23,132 → 19,358 (−3,774) Therefore, simply saying “cutoffs have increased” or “cutoffs have decreased” would be an incomplete interpretation. 🔴 Positive Shift vs Negative Shift Positive Shift = Cutoff moved to a higher rank number This can indicate that candidates at relatively lower ranks may have received opportunities that were less accessible at the same stage in 2025. Negative Shift = Cutoff moved to a better/lower rank number This indicates comparatively tougher competition for that branch/category in Round 1. And this distinction becomes extremely important while making choices for Round 2 and subsequent rounds. 🧠 What Should Aspirants Take From This? Don't make your counselling strategy based only on the 2025 closing rank. Instead, look at: 2025 R1 → 2026 R1 → Direction of shift → Category → Branch → Number of seats → Subsequent-round strategy For example, the 2026 dataset shows 1,363 General Medicine seats, 1,361 Anaesthesiology seats, 1,241 General Surgery seats, 1,232 Obstetrics & Gynaecology seats, 718 Orthopaedics seats, and 547 Ophthalmology seats in the analysed All India Quota table. The analysis also extends beyond MD/MS to DNB and Diploma courses, where several branches show completely different patterns from the traditional MD/MS trends. 🚨 Most Important Message Don't blindly follow last year's cutoff. 2025 data is a reference. 2026 Round 1 data is the current trend. The real counselling strategy comes from understanding the shift between the two. Which branches have become easier? Which have become tougher? Which categories have seen the biggest movement? Which branches are showing unexpected behaviour? And most importantly What does this mean for YOUR rank and YOUR choice filling? That is where detailed analysis becomes more useful than simply looking at a cutoff PDF. 🎯 ProMed Mentor Discussion At ProMed Mentor, the objective is not just to give you numbers.
