How do you address employee performance concerns without making the conversation personal?
Difficult performance conversations are part of leadership, but they don’t have to become confrontations.
Welcome back to Leadership Lessons from the Trenches, where I share real-world leadership experiences, practical strategies, and lessons learned while navigating the transition from doing the work to leading the people who do it.
In today’s episode, How to Have Difficult Performance Conversations, I’m introducing a four-step communication framework called O.E.Q.A.
O — Observation: What objectively happened?
E — Expectation: What was supposed to happen?
Q — Question: What prevented the expectation from being met?
A — Agreement: What needs to happen moving forward?
Through practical workplace examples, I’ll show you how to approach performance conversations with greater clarity, confidence, and respect.
In this video, you’ll learn:
Why avoiding difficult conversations can create bigger leadership challenges.
How to separate observable behavior from personal assumptions.
How to communicate performance expectations clearly.
Why listening is an essential part of accountability.
How to establish next steps and follow-through.
INTRODUCING: FROM PEER TO LEADER
I’m also developing a leadership workshop called From Peer to Leader: Making the S.H.I.F.T.™ from Doing the Work to Leading the People Who Do It.
This workshop is designed for new and emerging leaders who want to strengthen their communication, accountability, teamwork, confidence, and leadership boundaries.
O.E.Q.A. is one of the practical tools incorporated into the workshop, and I’m excited to share more about this learning experience soon!
LET’S CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION!

A. Starting the conversation
