Just over four light-years away sits the closest star to our Solar System — and orbiting it is one of the most fascinating planets we’ve ever discovered. Proxima Centauri b lies inside its star’s habitable zone, where temperatures could theoretically allow liquid water to exist. At first glance, it sounds almost perfect: a roughly Earth-mass world orbiting our nearest stellar neighbor and potentially close enough for future spacecraft to reach. But there’s a problem. Proxima Centauri is nothing like our Sun. It’s a red dwarf — a small but magnetically violent star capable of producing enormous flares and blasting its surroundings with intense high-energy radiation. Because Proxima b orbits extremely close to its star, any atmosphere it possesses must survive a relentless environment of X-rays, ultraviolet radiation, stellar wind, and repeated eruptions powerful enough to dramatically alter conditions on the planet. And some of those flares are enormous. What looks like one of humanity’s best candidates for a nearby habitable world may instead be an environment where maintaining an atmosphere — let alone complex life on the surface — becomes extraordinarily difficult. In this video, Stellar travels to the Proxima Centauri system to explore what conditions could actually be like on Proxima b, the extreme activity of its parent star, what would happen to a planet exposed to this environment for billions of years, and whether life could still find a way to survive around the closest star to our own.
