Shipmates. Angelo knocks over his time machine and out pops a 17th-century pirate. It couldn't be your actual Blackbeard, could it? Either way, he mistakes Katy's feng shui diagram for a treasure map, and refuses to return to his ship until he's plundered some loot. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 1st February, 2000.
There's a lot to enjoy here, and it runs the full gamut. Yes, there are sword fights and explosions, but there are also moments when even Katy has sympathy for our buccaneer friend. Her calling him by his real name of Edward was a very clever touch, as was the eventual booby trap having been set up much earlier in a way that felt like was its own punchline at the time.
A handful of minor points of note: (1) I don't think we've ever seen the front door wobble like that before; (2) Angelo explicitly mentions memories of his home planet, which is pretty rare; (3) "That would be like stealing" may or may not be a reference to The Young Ones; and (4) I'm not sure the geography of where the Fawkes-Bentley residence seems to be through the telescope quite works. But that's just me nit-picking, as usual.
The guest star of this one is Tony Selby, who is sadly no longer with us but boasts an IMDB that goes back to 1951. I like the way that he plays the part as a relatively pleasant (in pirate terms) and vulnerable chap, rather than going full-on I'm-going-to-chop-you-all-to-bits angry mode. Interesting to note that he would have been in his 60s when this was made, while the real Blackbeard probably never made it to 40.
Huge thanks to Lee for supplying this recording.
