The first priority is often establishing reliable intravenous access using an IV cannula, commonly called a “Vigo.” A suitable, prominent vein is selected, and the cannula size is chosen according to the patient's condition and the treatment required. IV cannulas are measured in gauge—the lower the gauge number, the larger the bore. For example, a 16-gauge cannula is wider than an 18-, 20-, or 22-gauge cannula and can allow fluids to be administered more rapidly. In emergencies involving significant blood loss or low blood pressure, larger-bore access or multiple IV lines may be required. Students are also introduced to the three-way stopcock, IV drip set, blood transfusion set, Vigo connector, and pressure or infusion lines used with infusion pumps. Drugs such as noradrenaline, dopamine, dobutamine, and vasopressin may require controlled administration through an infusion pump under appropriate monitoring. The orientation also covers oxygen-delivery devices, including oxygen masks and nasal cannulas, along with Foley’s urinary catheter and urobag for monitoring urine output when clinically indicated. Other essential equipment includes syringes of different sizes, feeding tubes such as Ryle’s tube, and appropriate lubricating jelly to reduce discomfort and trauma during tube or catheter insertion. Finally, students are introduced to the endotracheal tube, an essential airway device used when a patient requires mechanical ventilation.
