Sand does not make heat. It stores it. Warm it while heat is easy to get — the leftover heat of a supper fire, the sun, the cheap hours on your electric bill — and it gives that warmth back slowly, after the fire is out. Our great-grandparents carried hot sand to bed. Today a power company in Finland uses a silo of sand to help heat a whole town.
Now the honest number. One 50 lb bag of play sand holds about the heat of a space heater running nine minutes. It will not heat a whole room by itself. What it can do is have your bed warm when you lie down, and keep a slow warm spot at your feet through the coldest hours of the night.
In this video: which bag to buy at Home Depot (and the one on the same pallet you must never heat), how to dry it, how to sew a sand sack for the bed, how to build the warm box for the foot of the bed, where the heat comes from, and the ten-second palm test that tells you when it is too hot.
Safety first: the middle of a warm sack is hotter than the outside — knead it, and if you cannot hold your palm on it for a slow count of ten, it is too hot for a bed. Take the sack out of the bed when you get in. If you have diabetes or numb feet, ask your doctor before using any warm object in bed. Cotton only, warmed inside a covered metal pan in a low oven, never in the microwave. Steel cans only, no plastic lids, never heated sealed. Never put a warm box under the bed. Pour sand outdoors and do not breathe the dust (crystalline silica). Never bring a grill, camp stove or outdoor propane heater indoors, and keep a carbon monoxide alarm on every floor. No homemade electric heaters in sand. If you are older, keep the rooms where you live and sleep at sixty-eight degrees or warmer.
Tell me in the comments: your state, and how you heat your bedroom.
