【English】
Heart Sutra Canon — the Heart Sutra, sung as a three-voice canon over the ground bass of Pachelbel's Canon. Three voices sing the same melody and the same text, each entering two bars after the one before — a canon, or round.
■ Why it doesn't clash
The accompaniment repeats the same eight chords (C–G–Am–Em–F–C–F–G) every two bars, and the voices are offset by exactly those two bars. So wherever each voice is in the sutra, it is always singing over the same point in the chord progression. If the melody is built from the notes of each chord, the voices form chords however they overlap.
The chord names scroll across the top of the screen. Each column has faint lines at the pitches of its chord; watch the three colored voices land on those lines and stack vertically into a chord at the playhead.
■ Listening guide
・"Emptiness" (空, kū) is sung high and "form" (色, shiki) low: "form is emptiness" rises, "emptiness is form" falls.
・"Neither arising (↑) nor ceasing (↓), neither defiled (↓) nor pure (↑), neither increasing (↑) nor decreasing (↓)" — each word moves in the direction of its meaning.
・In the four praises of the mantra ("the great divine mantra, the great bright mantra, the unsurpassed mantra, the unequaled mantra"), each landing note is one step higher.
・The final mantra (gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā) grows from one voice to two to a full three-voice chord, thins back to two and then one, and all three close together with "Hannya Shingyō".

■ About this video
・The chord progression is the ground bass of Pachelbel's Canon; the melody and the three-voice setting were composed for this video.
・The pronunciation follows the actual Japanese chant. The opening title is not chanted; the sutra begins with "Kanjizai Bosatsu".
・This is a musical work, not an official recording of any temple, Buddhist school, or practitioners' group.
・The composition, synthesis, and video were programmed by Claude (Anthropic), planned and reviewed by NISHIO Hirokazu.
