Beneath the surface of our oceans lies a world we were never meant to see, a realm where light dies and life takes on forms that should not be possible. We have sent rovers to Mars and mapped galaxies 11 billion light years away, yet we have explored less than 5% of the deep sea, the largest living space on this planet.
Some of what follows is documented, filmed, and catalogued by research vessels and institutes like MBARI and the Smithsonian. Some of it was hidden from us until the Second World War. And some of it, like why nearly three-quarters of deep sea life produces its own light, still has no explanation at all.
