His quadruple Salchow became so reliable that Yuzuru Hanyu studied it when the two began training together in Toronto. Hanyu later described Javier as a technical reference and said having someone like him directly in front of him was a huge advantage. But Javier’s real danger was balance. He could land difficult quadruple jumps, skate with speed and quality, earn strong program components, and then turn the entire performance into entertainment. Charlie Chaplin, Sinatra, pirates, comedy and Spanish swagger could sit beside some of the hardest technical content in men’s skating. He became a two-time World Champion, won seven consecutive European titles, earned Spain’s first Olympic figure-skating medal, and defeated Yuzuru Hanyu for a World Championship not once, but twice. His 2016 Boston comeback was so extraordinary that Brian Orser called it the best he had ever seen at Worlds. This is the story of how a relaxed kid from Madrid became one of the few men of his era capable of beating Yuzuru Hanyu at his peak — while somehow making the whole thing look easy.
