WEST VIRGINIA SURVIVES! 🏈 The Mountaineers outlast the Cincinnati Bearcats in a wild 45–42 shootout to improve to 4–3 overall and 1–3 in Big 12 play! But while WVU found a way to win on the road, the defensive concerns are becoming impossible to ignore.
In this postgame reaction, I'm breaking down everything from West Virginia's roller-coaster victory over Cincinnati, including an explosive offensive performance, clutch plays in the fourth quarter, and a defense that surrendered more than 600 yards of total offense.
🔥 THE GOOD:
Michael Hawkins Jr. delivers: The WVU quarterback made some incredible plays with his arm and legs, including a spectacular rushing touchdown and multiple huge throws in critical moments.
DJ Epps comes up HUGE: Epps delivered explosive plays, including a 37-yard touchdown reception that brought back memories of Tavon Austin's legendary performance against Texas in 2012!
Amari Latimer breaks out: Latimer made his presence felt as both a runner and receiver, finishing a crucial drive with a touchdown.
Cam Cook's clutch response: Cook took a screen pass 40 yards to the house to tie the game at 42 in the fourth quarter.
Prince Strachan saves the day: Facing a potential disaster deep in their own territory, the Mountaineers got a massive 41-yard catch from Strachan on third-and-9 from their own 2-yard line. That drive ultimately set up Jack Cassidy's game-winning 35-yard field goal.
Ball security and discipline: No turnovers and just four penalties for 31 yards helped WVU win a game that could easily have gone the other way.
🚨 THE CONCERNS:
Cincinnati piled up more than 600 yards of total offense. How does this defense continue to give up so many explosive plays?
The defensive front seven struggled to contain Cole Tabb, JC French and the Cincinnati rushing attack.
WVU's defensive backs repeatedly gave Bearcats receivers too much room to operate.
The offensive play calling had some frustrating stretches, particularly early in the game.
Cam Cook appeared to be moving slowly at times. Is he dealing with an injury?
West Virginia made the plays it needed to escape with a victory, but this defensive performance raises serious questions about how sustainable this success will be as Big 12 play continues.
FINAL SCORE: West Virginia 45, Cincinnati 42
WVU RECORD: 4–3 overall | 1–3 Big 12
Was this a turning point for the Mountaineers' offense, or should we be more concerned than ever about the defense? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
