The seven-part sacred madrigal "Il Magnanimo Pietro" performed by The Voice of the Viol, Danielle Reutter-Harrah, soprano. Lagrime di San Pietro (“tears of Saint Peter”) is the last composition of Orlande de Lassus (also known in Italian as Lasso). This set of twenty madrigals and a motet (from which we perform the first madrigal) is an example of madrigali spirituali (“sacred madrigals”)—in this case, a dramatization of the conflicting emotions of Saint Peter during the Passion of Jesus (Nicholas Jones). The brilliance of Lassus is on full display in his impeccable seven-part counterpoint. This work presented here for the first time in 8K UHD video. The Voice of the Viol Elisabeth Reed, director Wendy Gillespie, Elisabeth Reed, Malachai Komanoff Bandy, Farley Pearce, William Skeen & David H. Miller, Elizabethan viols. The Voice of the Viol is a program of Voices of Music. Magnanimous Peter, who had sworn amidst a thousand lances and a thousand swords to die beside his dear Lord, when he realized, overcome by cowardice, that in his great hour of need he had lacked faith, the shame and the grief and the pity of his failure and for the suffering of the Other pierced his breast with a thousand stabs.
