In Mexico, the marigolds are scattered in a path from the road to the door, because the dead are said to find their way home by the scent.
On the first of November the children come back, and on the second, everyone else.
Families build an ofrenda and set out what each person loved while they were here — a photograph, their favourite food, pan de muerto, a glass of water for the long walk, salt, a candle for every soul expected. Copal smoke so they know the house. Papel picado overhead, cut so thin it moves when anyone walks past, because that is roughly how long a life lasts.
Then people go to the cemetery and stay. They clean the graves, they bring food and music, and they sit there through the night talking to the people they miss — not quietly, not mournfully. They tell the stories that make everyone laugh. The belief is not that the dead are gone. It’s that once a year they come back, and you’d want the house to look nice.
This isn’t Halloween. There’s nothing frightening in it anywhere. It’s an invitation, and it’s one of the warmest things a culture has ever made out of grief.
This music is for those two nights. For cooking, for building the altar, for sitting with a photograph, for remembering someone by name. No vocals. No lyrics. Nothing loud.
Every piece here was made for this channel and exists nowhere else.
Light the candle.
With gratitude,
