Max is always late. So when his friend Nico shows off an untested prototype watch called TURBO, Max straps it on and taps the dial.
Now he lives 100 times faster than everyone else. A falling cup hangs in the air. Raindrops float like glass beads. His friends are statues mid-sentence. It's the ultimate cheat code: he catches everything, reads a library in an afternoon and wins every race by a mile. Then the real physics shows up. Nobody can hear his voice. A jog breaks the sound barrier. He's starving every few minutes. And the watch can't switch off for a whole day, which for Max is more than three months, almost all of it alone.
The real science behind it:
• 100x a jog (13 km/h) is 1,300 km/h: faster than sound (about 1,235 km/h), so you'd leave a sonic boom
• Air resistance grows with speed squared: at 100x speed you'd push through 10,000x the drag
• Air rammed at about 500 m/s heats up by over 100 °C: your clothes would scorch
• A 100x faster voice would be too high-pitched for humans to hear
• A body running 100x faster burns energy 100x faster: a whole day's food every 15 minutes
• Flies really do see the world in slow motion: their eyes update about 4x faster than ours
• A movie is 24 pictures a second; to a 100x brain it would be a slow slideshow
• One normal day would last 100 days
