No Light Has Ever Reached This Place | Something Has Been Waiting Below

The miners found the staircase twelve kilometers beneath the oldest mountain in the north. That alone was impossible. No civilization had ever dug that deep. The steps descended into a cavern so enormous that our instruments couldn't find its walls. We released flares into the darkness. They vanished before illuminating anything. So we continued with lamps. After several hours, we noticed something strange. Our lights were still burning. But they illuminated nothing. Not the ground beneath our feet. Not our hands. Not even each other's faces. The darkness wasn't the absence of light. It was consuming it. We tied ourselves together and kept walking. Then we heard the bells. Far below us. Slow. Enormous. Ancient. With every toll, someone remembered something that had never happened, a childhood beneath a black sun, cities carved into mountains, millions of people kneeling before something hidden beneath the earth. Then one of us whispered: “I remember this place.” Another answered: “So do I.” One by one, we all did. At the bottom of the staircase, we found a doorway. Above it were symbols none of us had ever seen. Yet somehow, every one of us could read them. YOU LEFT US HERE WHEN THE WORLD WAS YOUNG. We never opened the door. We climbed for three days without stopping. When we finally reached the surface, sunrise was beginning. Everyone stood silently beneath it. Everyone except me. Because after what I remembered down there... I couldn't understand why we had ever called darkness empty. Something had been waiting beneath us since before the first sunrise.
