A fish. A tortoise. A boar. A being who was neither man nor animal. A dwarf. A warrior. A king. A strategist. And finally, Kalki.
We often hear the Dashavatara as a list of ten avatars. But when we look deeper into the Vishnu Purana and related Puranic traditions, the story becomes much more fascinating.
Why did the form change each time? What was different about the problem Vishnu had to face? And what do the lesser-known stories behind these avatars reveal about the idea of preservation?
From Manu and the tiny fish, Ila/Sudyumna and Budha, Vamana's three cosmic strides, Aurva's destructive fire, Sita emerging from the Earth, and Rama's encounter with Maricha, to Krishna's world of strategy and dharma, the Puranic account of Maya-Moha, and the coming of Kalki - this is a journey through a much deeper side of the Dashavatara.
And perhaps the biggest question is not why Vishnu had ten forms.
It is:
When the world changes, does the solution have to change with it?
जब दुनिया बदलती है, तो उसे बचाने के लिए किस रूप की जरूरत होती है?
