Meet the Australian Pelican — one of Australia’s most remarkable waterbirds and a true master of life in changing environments.
From coastal waters to inland lakes, rivers, wetlands and even vast salt lakes, Australian Pelicans can travel wherever water and food become available. But when heavy rain transforms Australia’s normally dry interior, their story becomes even more fascinating.
As floodwaters fill inland wetlands, fish and other aquatic life can suddenly become abundant. Large numbers of Australian Pelicans may gather in these temporary wetlands, sometimes forming huge breeding colonies.
With a wingspan reaching around 2.5 metres, a massive bill, and a flexible throat pouch designed for catching fish, the Australian Pelican is perfectly adapted to life around water. It can also use rising thermals to soar for long distances while conserving energy.
But these birds are not tied to one fixed route. Their movements are strongly influenced by rainfall, water availability and food. When wetlands begin to dry, they can move on in search of better conditions.
In this video, discover the incredible life of the Australian Pelican — from Australia’s dry interior and sudden floods to mass gatherings, breeding colonies, feeding behaviour and long-distance movement.
