Welcome to Shakarparian, Islamabad’s favorite picnic spot. This hill is not just beautiful, it’s also where the history of our capital began. The foundation stone of Islamabad was laid on 24th October 1960 by the then President of Pakistan General Muhammad Ayub Khan at Shakarparian. From this very point, the plan for a new capital city was announced to the world. It was chosen because of its central location and high ground with a view of the whole planned capital. Capital Development Authority (CDA) developed Shakarparian in the 1980s as a public park. Heads of state from various countries planted trees here by hand during their visits to Pakistan. Today it’s Islamabad’s most popular picnic spot with green lawns, walking tracks, food stalls, and stunning view of the Margalla Hills. It offers a 360° view, cool weather, family areas, and it’s right next to the Pakistan Monument. Today, families come here to enjoy green lawns, walking tracks, and fresh air. You can see the entire Islamabad city, Faisal Mosque, Blue Area and Rawal lake. The name Shakarparian means "Fairies of Sugar" from an old local legend. Weekends and evenings are the busiest, with food stalls and people enjoying the sunset. Shakarparian connects us to our past, and gives us a place to relax in the present.
