Generative AI: New Questions on ELT Academic Writing and Knowledge Production

In this webinar, Professors Sandra Ximena Bonilla Medina and Javier Armando Sierra Gordillo will invite participants to explore the new questions that generative artificial intelligence raises for academic writing and knowledge production in English Language Teaching (ELT). Drawing on their expertise in applied linguistics, language education, teachers’ subjectivities, and critical approaches to language and technology, they will discuss how generative AI is reshaping academic practices, challenging established understandings of authorship, and opening new debates about the production and validation of knowledge. Rather than approaching AI merely as a technological tool for improving writing, the session will encourage critical reflection on its pedagogical, epistemological, and ethical implications for ELT research and academic communication. Participants will be invited to reconsider their own academic writing practices and explore how generative AI can be critically engaged with to foster more reflective, responsible, and inclusive approaches to knowledge production in the field.
