In May 1962, a fire in the landfill outside Centralia, Pennsylvania reached the anthracite seams beneath the town, and it has never been put out. In 1983 the federal Office of Surface Mining estimated full extinguishment at about $663 million. Congress instead set aside $42 million to move people away. Centralia had 2,761 residents at the 1890 census. By 2010 there were ten.
This film traces the early attempts to dig out and flush the fire, the 1979 gas readings, and the February 1981 day a boy fell into a smoking hole in a backyard. It covers the 1983 property-owner vote (345 to 200 to accept the buyout), the 1992 eminent-domain action, the loss of the ZIP code in 2002, the 2013 settlement with the last residents, and the science of how a coal-seam fire can keep burning underground for generations.
