This episode treats Gurgaon's walkability as a safety problem. People don't prefer walking because it is unsafe. For all reasons. Wide roads are dangerous to cross; streets are passage to vehicles; and dark and isolated roadsides become hubs of petty and not-so-petty crime. And, since walking is so unsafe, and alternatives do not exist, people have no option but to use their private vehicles. Guess why we get so much congestion everywhere? And guess why the ambulances never reach on time?
In this episode, we try to make the city walkable by tackling the safety issue with better urban planning. Safety from speeding; safety from low visibility; and safety from crime. This episode builds on where we left in the Episode 1 - that is, at robust and planned bus routes. You can watch Episode 1 after this episode.
We also extensively apply Jane Jacob's 'Eyes on the Street' concept while reimagining public spaces. In a city which does not have an appreciable crime record, eyes on the street are essential. We also talk about... well, you will find out!
